I haven’t posted any new art since the last University Club cartoon, that should change soon. Its been very busy lately, with vacations and trips and all, not to mention I had been saving this particular cartoon for the summer newsletter that skips a month. There are only 10 a year. I saved this one for the off month because I knew it would be very difficult, and it was. The rendering itself was pretty smooth, the hardest part was the concept stage, where I spent forever going through several ideas until I found one I liked. The verbiage hasn’t been sent to me, so all you have here is the art! (if your curious, this months topic was aimed at getting people to buy a parking sticker for the back lot to avoid tickets and towing.)

So this is the next cartoon for the University Club of Boston’s monthly newsletter. The Uclub is trying to resolve member issues and create awareness through the use of a New Yorker style cartoon, instead of putting up a text only rule. I think its a nice unique and fun idea.

I do so many caricatures, I thought I would try to just paint a likeness without exaggeration. I gotta say, I feel like a straight up painting is harder then a caricature. I got a great picture from, and of my cousin Dan, and thought it would look great as a painting. I worked on it on and off when I had free time for about a month or two, and this past week I really buckled down and finished it.

I already caricatured Conan, but Jimmy Kimmel is by far, at least in my opinion, the best late night host on television. I had to pay my artistic respects to the show. I have tried to caricature him quite a lot over time, and I never got it to look like him. I finally just hunkered down and went to work with the idea that I was going to get it this time, no matter what. I think it worked. I don’t know what style you would call this, its a light paint covering, I suppose it is a water color look, much like my painting of John Doggett. If you don’t count the time it took me trying over and over again in the past to get his likeness, I did this in about an hour or 2 today.

I have always wanted to write/illustrate a children’s book, and I think I have a pretty good idea. This is the very first concept I have come up with. Without giving everything away, the concept obviously revolves around a girl with very long hair. I wanted to see what the character would look like and I think its ready to move on to a story boarding stage already. That is a caricature/cartoon version of my wife as a child, and I want to stress how this is only a concept! I literally just flopped grass and sky in there to make it have a background, so nothing was thought of it. I am most definitely happy with the character design. Maybe on a book shelf near you some day?

The other night Dwight Howard had one of the sickest "dink attempts" in the history of the game. I had the same reaction watching it live as I did when I saw his superman dunk in the dunk contest.

He wrote about it in his blog, I found it to be humerus:

"But I think the highlight of my whole birthday game was when I tried to go up and dunk on Zach Randolph. I got the picture off the internet of that dunk attempt and it was tight! It was, like, one of the best dunk attempts ever and I wish I would've made it. I tried to go up and dunk on him and it had to be the world's greatest dunk attempt - ever. But I missed it! I missed the dunk but the dunk attempt was nasty. It kind of looked like the Superman dunk but better because it would have been over someone!"

Mini golf course proposal / financial backer

In the absolute of all chances, I am writing this in hopes that someone reading this has a lot of money, and has a love for mini golf. My brother and I have a more then obsessed passion for the game, and play it so much, that some might call it unhealthy. We frequent Ocean City NJ every year, sometimes more then once, and we try to play golf twice a day at the least. We know what is best, and the most fun for all. We have been thinking up course/hole designs for a while now, and I feel like it needs to be done. It has to be made.

Any takers?!

SO.. I have never drawn the misses, and have always had trouble doing a successful caricature of her. I tend to work better when I don't think things out, and I just do it. So the other day I just sat down and bam, went to work. Quick sketch, and turned out what I think is a very good likeness, in caricature form of coarse, of the future Mrs. Robertson. I didn't do anything with the background, so if y'all have any suggestions let me know. For now though, I am going to take a break from this until I can come up with a good idea for the backdrop.

Its not dont btw.... but suggestions all around are welcome.

This... was the best showing at a dunk contest in the history of dunk contests. Dwight Howard, was ROBBED last year by the judges, and its a shame because afterward, there was a YouTube video that surfaced with him doing some of the most amazing dunks you have ever seen, like the "kiss the rim" dunk where he not only makes the kissing motion, but he kisses it! Then another one where he hits his head on the rim! So this year I was so happy to see he was going to get redemption. It was a good contest, and Gerald Green had a good first dunk, where he blew out a candle utop the rim mid dunk that he called the "birthday cake jam" or something like that. Dwights first dunk however was just insane. He started from behind the backboard, and jammed it while his head was looking through the backside of the backboard! CRAZY. So then dunk #2 I saw Dwight put some tape down, about a foot ahead of the free throw line. I was actually thinking it might not be enough to get him into the second round because what could he possibly do from that distance that would top the birthday cake dunk? And to make matters worse, this was Dwights dunk where he had to use a teammate's assistance, so I was saying, this isn't any of the YouTube amazing dunks, and from that distance he cant do much in terms of flash and creativity. SO at this point the anxiety and drama and anticipation is through the roof, like what is he going to do. Then his teammate brings out this red thing, sheet. I said whats he going to do, whats wrapped up in that??? SO then his teammate unravels is and its a Superman cape. The crowd at this point is laughing and into it. THEN Dwight starts rustling his jersey, and at this point everyone assumes that he has something underneath, but it doesn't sink in until he rips his jersey off to reveal the cut off giant S on his chest. As soon as its officially unleashed, the crowd goes NUTS... it was fantastic! Everyone in the arena jumped out of their seats basically going "YEAHHH BOYYY" and Dikembe Mutumbo was lovin every moment, which made everything even better! So now I am pumped because now just wearing a cape and superman costume is good enough to get into the second round, so all he had to do was connect. The drum roll was on, and he backs up.... starts his take off, and Jameer Nelson, his teammate bounces the ball for the ally-oop... The camera is behind Dwight traveling with him... and he takes off... LITERALLY, he goes OFF THE SCREEN... with one of the most THUNDEROUS DUNKS EVER... you know what, it IS THE MOST THUNDEROUS DUNK EVER. The crowd had lost it, I lost it, my fiance lost it... it was one of those fantastic rare moments where you had to just hold yourself and the people behind you back, because what you were seeing was DANGEROUS! The reactions were classic... The look on Magic Johnson's(one of the judges) face could be described as a mixture of 2 different things : that was the SICKEST dunk I have ever seen, and disgust. Like how could a man have the audacity to do such a stupendous thing! Dominique Wilkens, arguably the best dunker ever, threw his score cards down on the table in equal disgust. How dare Dwight do such a good dunk. When they started showing different angles, you see that Dwights head was EASILY above the rim, and it LITERALLY looked like he was flying! You hear people say dunkers look like they are flying, like MJ for example, but never has it literally been true. He was so high that he threw the ball through the hoop! For any other dunk, ever, I would have said that was no good, it wasn't a dunk... he missed it... BUT this was a once in a life time chance. It looked like superman when he is throwing an asteroid! THATS WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE!

It was the best dunk ... it cant be topped... and it was a once in a life time experience. If he would have not threw it though and missed it on the first attempted, it wouldn't have worked out. But it did, it was history, and it was amazing. Watching it live is the only way to have watched it, because watching the recap doesn't bring back all the emotions of drama and anticipation that we were treated to last night. I will remember it forever and it was fantastic in every way.

As the NBA says, "I love this game."

Johnny, you cant beat this.

- no its no a Mac, and super thin, but it has a lot of beef and you can actually put CD's in it!

- You can draw on it! I mean come ON what else do you need!?

- and most important, it has a nub mouse and not a touch pad. I HATE touch pads and I can use those little nubs so much better, with so much more precision!

So I went to art school right, and I took a gazillion mandatory art history classes, but yet I never saw this painting by a man named Lee Teter. I'm not sure if its called "Reflections" or Vietnam Reflections," but either way I think it is the most amazing, emotional, inspiration painting of all time, thus my favorite. I have seen it many times before, just never mentioned in art school. I wonder why?

So I was looking at my website... www.TJRanimation.com and I watched my demo reel. I haven't watched it in a long time, so it was almost like it wasn't my work(which makes it easier to critique). One major thing I noticed was how it was like an espn spot. WAY to much sports. So I call upon you, oh faithful bloggers to assist me, Tim Robertson, with my animation ideas. I am not looking for some complex grandiose story that will take 3 years and a team of animators to complete... so if you have any cool little short bits of movement I could do, let me know.

So I am looking at movie trailers, and I stumble across a movie I have seen a million times but always passed it over since I thought the poster, and name were nerdy, and stupid. Then I was reading Wired Magazine the other day and there was an article about the new era of 3D animation. They were talking about this movie, the very same one I had passed over numerous times, Beowulf. Apparently this new wave is basically movies that are entirely made with 3D animation, but the catch is... its all Motion Capture(MoCap). Why? I really don't understand it. I watched the trailer finally, and it looks like a regular live action movie, but for some strange reason they decided to make it all in 3D. Its obviously 3D also. I could see if it was 100% realistic, but anyone, even my mom should easily tell its all computers. Hollywood has done such an amazing job integrating live action with 3D so I really don't see their motive here. I really got the feeling I was watching the trailer for a video game. This "new wave" they speak of kills animators, and this particular movie does it for no reason.
The movie Monster House from a few years ago was even more frustrating to me because it was more of your typical 3D movie, but it was creative in the sense that it had cartoonish characters that a design team actually had to think up. This would make you think along the lines of Pixar and Dreamworks having an overworked very qualified team of animators pulling each little bone and joint into position bringing characters to life and past reality, you know, like the classics. Monster House tricks you, because they said to hell with animators, lets use MoCap! It was kind of like watching a movie about a car chase while riding in a car. It just didn't match up.
So this "new wave" is apparently spewing out a few more movies in the upcoming years, and I am not sure about what the point of it is, or maybe its easier to make??(I don't see that logic) Either way, I don't like it, and I hope its only a fad because if your going to make a live action movie with actors, there is no better way to do that then to shoot their faces with a camera and add in whatever CG you need to via compositing.

Go watch Toy Story.

Here is my next painting(who shall remain nameless just to see if y'all know who he is, you know, standard deal)... Brah, this one is for you! No... literally, this is your X-mas present. Ha. You get a sneak peak thanks to the bloggosphere. So yeah, I am pretty pleased with it so far, I just took from what I did in my sketchbook last night, and did a quick 20 min black and white with the Wacom. For those of you who have seen my previous attempts at him(they all failed miserably) I am very pleased to see this one is actually decent. Would you agree? Also he is the first person I ever tried to do a caricature of... ever. So now with your approval I will go ahead and start to paint him, so do I have the thumbs up to continue? Add color to the man?

Wacom!

So everyone should know I have always, always always hated painting. I have always said I love to make art, providing it doesn't involve paint. Well see theres this thing called the Wacom Tablet that I got as you all know by now, and here is my first creation:

The verdict you say? I am amazed. Imaging getting the quality of paint without the hassle! When I first took it out of the box I was worried because there is a pretty nice learning curve getting used to it. It may not be like a mouse, but even at that theres nothing that compared to a pencil. I am glad though, because for painting it works wonders, which is what I bought it for, but now this means I wont abandon the trusty sketchbook for preliminary stuff. I want to do 2 more and then see if I can get an illustration job doing caricatures and what not for some editorial. I wanna do 1 more portrait, and one just hilarious, like the one in Dodgeball of Ben Stiller "grabbing the bull by the horns." So if you have any ideas on what the super funny one should be please send your ideas. And what do you think?

So I as you may or may not know I have taken up caricature art. I find that it is incredibly hard and 'regular' art is cake comparatively. Drawing regular portraits is simply drawing who(or what) you see, but when your caricaturing your not drawing what your see, but more, your drawing what is there. Your not drawing a picture of a person, you are drawing that person. I usually have about 2-4 reference photos I grab from while drawing because there are some things you just cant get from 1 picture. You need to determine what to exaggerate, what to minimize, enhance, keep the same, and so on. It really make you feel like more of an "artist" and not just someone drawing with just their eyes. If you haven't tried it you should.

Here is a Work In Progress of Jeremy's boy... Barack. What do you think? Suggestions? This would be a good one to save for when I get my Wacom Tablet to put into an oil painting style.

First real post!

Well welcome to my Blog! This is the first real post I am making since I came up with a layout I was happy with. I always wanted to have my portfolio site and theme be http://animationorange.com/ but some bum is just sitting on that address hatching it like an egg. It contains absolutely NO orange, and if you look at it, the small amount of animation it actually does contain, is possibly the WORST most pointless crrrrap I have ever seen! I tried like 2 years ago when I got my TJRanima tion.com address to e-mail the bum and make him some sort of bribe but obviously that hasn't worked out. Serenity now.

Anyways, here is my blog, I put up some links to the right, and I also plan to have more goodies soon. Check out the last 2 links, Coast to Coast and the Real Story, both have information about how scientists are about 3 years away from being able to create a human from scratch.... now thats some crazy stuff right there.

And one last thing, I am just seeing what it looks like to add a picture. This is a caricature I did recently, can you tell who it is
